SAN JOSE, Calif. – San José State baseball left-handed pitcher Andrew Mitchel has been named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 11 after his dominating 18-strikeout complete game performance against Air Force on March 8.
Mitchel scattered four hits and walked just two batters as he went the distance to lead the Spartans to a 4-1 win in the series opener. The Atwater, California, product's 18 punch-outs are the second-most in school history in a nine inning game and the most since 1964. It also ranks as the second-most by a Mountain West pitcher in a conference game in conference history, second only to Stephen Strasburg's 23 strikeouts vs. Utah on April 11, 2008.
Mitchel's 18 strikeouts are also the most thrown by any pitcher in the NCAA this season.
"I am extremely happy for Andrew and proud of his unbelievable performance Friday night," head coach Brad Sanfilippo said. "He was electric and competed for his team at the highest level."
Mitchel also picked up Mountain West Player of the Week Honors by College Sports Madness, was named one of the Collegiate Baseball National Players of the Week and is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award/D1 Baseball.com Performance of the Week.
