Stanford, Calif.— With thunder, lightning and hail as part of the afternoon weather in the South Bay, the San José State beach volleyball team played duals against Saint Mary's and Stanford Sunday afternoon at the Stanford Beach Volleyball Complex.
The Spartans fell 5-0 to the Gaels in the first dual of the day. Thaliana Grajeda and Kaitlynn Zdroik pushed their match to three sets after winning set two 21-19 but fell 21-18 in set one and 16-14 in the third set. Julia Golbeck and Sarah Smevog fell in straight sets to the Gael pair, falling to 8-1 on the season.
However, Golbeck and Smevog rebounded their match against the Stanford pair, winning 21-14 and 21-19, for San José State's only point in the 4-1 loss to the Cardinal. Grajeda and Zdroik also pushed their match to three sets before falling 21-17, 19-21, 15-10.
San José State is now 5-5 on the season and play next weekend in Folsom. On Friday the 15th, the Spartans face Saint Mary's and Sacramento State. Then on Saturday, the team plays San Francisco and Sacramento State.
