Bandon, Ore.----- On the Bandon Dunes Resort course that played much easier for round two than in the opening round, the San Jose State University men's golf team kept pace with the leaders and stands fifth out of 17 teams heading into the 18 holes of the Bandon Dunes Championship.
The Spartans improved their team score from round one to round two by 15 strokes with a four-under par 284 for a 583 total after 36 holes on the par 72, 6,994-yard links-style course. Sunny skies, milder winds and temperatures in the mid 50's replaced winter-like conditions that led to a 2.5-hour frost delay for the opening round.
First-round leader Ohio State matched San Jose State with its four-under par team score and with its 575 has a two-stroke lead over second place Utah at 577. Denver, which posted a nine-under par 279 for the best team score of the day, is third at 579. Fresno State is sandwiched between Denver and the Spartans at 581.
The top eight teams in the field posted under-par scores to stay in contention for the team championship.
It was a day of southpaw scoring for San Jose State. Lefties Bryce Wortman and Ben Campbell led the way with two-under par 70's. Campbell was on fire early with four birdies and no bogeys through his first eight holes. He finished with six birdies on his round.
Wortman stayed closer to par on the day before a pair of birdies on his last five holes of the shotgun start for his 70.
Kevin Velo gave San Jose State a third under par score on the day with a 71. His 143 total puts him in a four-way tie for seventh place, four shots behind Blake Tomlinson of Utah and Esteban Missura of Denver at 139.
Sean Yu was the Spartans' fourth counting score with a 73. Matt Heitel's 78 did not count in the team scoring format. Parker Sisk and Nate Jetter, playing as individuals, are tied at 152 and 161 respectively.
Unlike the opening round when there were nine scores of par or better, 43 second-round players either matched or bettered par. Consequently, the overall stroke average for the round was 4.03 strokes better per player.
The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday, March 12.
