Women's Gymnastics At California Sunday For Quad Meet

The San José State women's gymnastics team travels up Interstate 880 for a quad meet Sunday afternoon hosted by California. The meet features the Golden Bears, Illinois, Sacramento State and the Spartans.

This is the second time in 10 days that the Bears and Spartans will compete against each other. The Spartans and Hornets will compete in the same meet for the fourth time in five meets this season. Next week, the two teams will compete for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship in Seattle.  The Spartans and Ilini competed against each other at the 2009 NCAA West Regional in Seattle, Wash. Illinois advanced to the NCAA Championship from that meet, while two Spartans advanced to the championship in the all-around - Veronica Porte and Thomasina Wallace.

LAST WEEK
The Spartans posted a 193.725 on Senior Night last Friday against California. Taylor Chan won the all-around, and Chelsey Andrada led the team on the beam with a 9.850. 

SPARTAN COACHING STAFF
Head coach Joanne Bowers is in her first season at the helm of the San José State program. She is the sixth head coach in the program's now 50-year history in August of 2018.  From 2007 to 2016, Bowers was the head women's gymnastics coach at the University of Washington.

James Williams and Jeffrey Langenstein are in their first season as assistant coaches for the Spartans after joining the program in September of 2018. Chelsea Spomer is in her second year with the program, serving as the director of operations for the 2019 season.

ANDRADA TIES BEAM RECORD
Chelsey Andrada scored a 9.900 on beam at Sacramento State on February 8 to tie the San José State record. She is one of eight Spartans to receive a 9.900 which has happened 11 times in school history. The last to do it before Andrada was Taylor Chan who did it in 2017 at the MPSF Championships.

BEAM TEAM SHINES AT SEATTLE PACIFIC

The Spartans scored a season-best 48.825 on beam in the final rotation at Seattle Pacific. Taylor Chan led the team with a  9.850, followed by Chelsey Andrada and Stephanie Relova at 9.800. Tia Gin had a season-best 9.750, Carli Orcutt added a 9.625, while Josalyn Ray had a 9.125.

VAULT TEAM POSTED SOLID SCORES
The Spartan vault team recorded a season-best 48.475 twice this season - in a home meet with Boise State and UC Davis and at Sacramento State. At the home meet, Chelsey Andrada led the team as she tied her career high with a 9.875. The reigning MPSF Vault Champion, her score tied the third-highest score in school history. At Sacramento State, Carli Orcutt won her first collegiate event title as she led the Spartans with a 9.800. 

BARS TEAM SHINES IN HOME MEET
The Spartan bars team scored a season-best 48.825 in a home meet with New Hampshire and Sacramento State on February 15. Kaprece Nadonza led the team with a 9.875 to tie for first place. She was followed by Stephanie Relova at 9.825, Nikki Duggan at 9.775, Carli Orcutt at 9.725, Taylor Chan at 9.625 and Tia Gin at 9.400.

SPARTANS WITH FLOOR BEST AT SEMO
The Spartan floor team recorded a season-best 48.825 in the win at Southeast Missouri on January 18. Taylor Chan led the team as she tied first with a 9.90. Freshman Jasmine Henley had a season-best 9.8000, while fellow freshman Carli Orcutt recorded a 9.725 in her first collegiate floor routine. Josalyn Ray and Stephanie Relova each had a 9.700, and Chelsey Andrada had a 9.675.

CHAN 9.900 = SIX FLOOR WINS
Taylor Chan
likes to win on the floor when she scores a 9.900. In the six meets she scored a 9.900, she won or tied for first. Her latest floor title came at Seattle Pacific on March 1
