Los Angeles, Calif.----- San Jose State University freshman Olga Descalzi Portell scored five of her eight goals on the day in an 11-9 win over #14-Princeton to highlight the Spartans' first day's action in the LMU Invitational women's water polo tournament.
Descalzi Portell's two goals to open the second half broke a 5-5 tie, put San Jose State (7-6) ahead to stay and ignited a four-goal rally in a five-goal third-quarter against the Tigers (12-5). The Spartans' 11 goals were just the fourth time this season Princeton allowed 10 or more goals in a match.
Lili Urvari scored two of her six goals on the day for San Jose State in the win over Princeton.
The Spartans' also had a five-goal fourth quarter in their first match of the tournament against #20-Marist. That was enough to wipe out a 9-4 deficit with 6:38 to go and send the match into the overtime. Sierra Painter's one score of the day gave San Jose State hope for a complete comeback.
However, Anais Mathes scored the game-winner on an even strength goal with 1:01 in the first overtime to give Marist a 10-9 win over San Jose State.
Urvari led the Spartans in scoring with four. Descalzi Portell poured in two of her three goals in the fourth-quarter rally.
