The two-time defending Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion San José State women's gymnastics team looks for a three-peat this Saturday night at the 2019 MPSF Championships hosted by Seattle Pacific. The Falcons host the six-team meet featuring UC Davis, Air Force, the Spartans, Alaska Anchorage, Sacramento State and SPU. 

The Spartans won the 2018 crown with a school-record 195.975, and the 2017 title with a then-school record 195.925. Chelsey Andrada returns to defend her 2018 MPSF vault title after scoring a career-best 9.875.

San José State enters the meet as the third seed, will start the meet on the beam and will have a similar rotation to the 2017 team. UC Davis enters the meet as the top seed.

LAST WEEK
The Spartans posted a season-best 194.450 Sunday afternoon at the California Quad meet with the Golden Bears, Illinios and Sacramento State. The floor team scored a season-best 49.000, while the vault team had a season-high 48.650.

SPARTAN COACHING STAFF
Head coach Joanne Bowers is in her first season at the helm of the San José State program. She is the sixth head coach in the program's now 50-year history in August of 2018.  From 2007 to 2016, Bowers was the head women's gymnastics coach at the University of Washington.

James Williams and Jeffrey Langenstein are in their first season as assistant coaches for the Spartans after joining the program in September of 2018. Chelsea Spomer is in her second year with the program, serving as the director of operations for the 2019 season.

A LOOK BACK AT THE CHAMPIONSHIPS
2018 CHAMPIONSHIP

The Spartans needed a school-record 195.975 team score to with the 2018  MPSF title and the first back-to-back titles in school history.

Individually Chelsey Andrada and Kaitlin Won captured event titles. Andrada won the vault with a career-best 9.875, becoming the fourth Spartan to win an MPSF vault title. Won scored a 39.225 in the all-around to win the title and is only the third Spartan to win an MPSF all-around title.

The Spartan beam team tied the school record with a 49.275, and the floor team had to go with five performers due to injuries. The team went five-for-five on floor with a 48.950. 

2017 CHAMPIONSHIP
The first of the two back-to-back championships came at The Event Center in 2017. The Spartans won the team title with a then-school-record tying 195.925. The team tied the record set by the 2004 team, which coincidentally was set when the Spartans won the 2004 MPSF Championship.

Individually, two Spartans were named MPSF Event Champions. Haleigh Shepard won the vault with a career-best 9.825. Taylor Chan tied for first on floor with a 9.875.

Headed into the final rotation the top-three teams were separated by just .100 of a point. UC Davis led 194.825, followed by Sacramento State at 146.800 and San José State at 146.725. The Hornets finished first with a 48.375 on vault, followed by the Spartans with the third-highest (tied) bars score in school history at 49.200 and UC Davis on floor with a 48.900. The Spartan bar team was led by Kaprece Nadonza who scored a career-best 9.900 to finish second.

Carli Orcutt has received MPSF Freshman of the Week honors four times this season. Last week she was honored after competing in the all-around for the first time in her collegiate career. She had a 38.500 in the all-around at UC Davis which included a 9.725 on vault, a 9.700 on bars, a 9.625 on floor and a 9.450 on beam (her fist time competing on beam).

She was honored on February 19, after tying for second on vault with a 9.775 and added a 9.725 on bars and a 9.550 on floor in a meet with Sacramento State and New Hampshire.

She received her second MPSF Freshman of the Week honor on February 5. In a home meet with UC Davis and Boise State, Orcutt recorded a 9.725 on vault and helped the vault team score a season-best 48.475. She added a 9.725 on bars and a 9.650 on floor.

Her other Freshman of the Week honor came on January 22, as she helped the team to a win at Southeast Missouri. Orcutt started the night with a 9.750 on bars and followed that up with a 9.700 on vault. She then made her debut on floor in the third rotation with a 9.725. For the meet, she was third on bars, tied for fourth on vault and tied for sixth on floor.

Kaprece Nadonza was named the MPSF Specialist of the Week on February 19. She tied for first on bars with a season-best 9.875, her best bars score since the MPSF Championship meet in 2017. Nadonza won just her second bars title of her collegiate career.

Taylor Chan has received the MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors twice this year. At Boise State on January 13, Chan tied her career-best score in the all-around with a 39.175. Chan led the team on the bars with a 9.800, the beam with a 9.825 and the floor with a 9.800. She tied for second in the all-around, tied for third on floor and tied for fourth on beam.

At the NorCal Classic on January 6, Chan finished second in the all-around at the NorCal Classic with a 39.025. Chan tied for first on floor with a 9.900, and added a 9.800 on beam, 9.700 on vault and 9.625 on bars. 

ANDRADA TIES BEAM RECORD
Chelsey Andrada
scored a 9.900 on beam at Sacramento State on February 8 to tie the San José State record. She is one of eight Spartans to receive a 9.900 which has happened 11 times in school history. The last to do it before Andrada was Taylor Chan who did it in 2017 at the MPSF Championships.

FLOOR TEAM RECORDS FIRST 49.000 OF 2019

The Spartan floor team recorded a season-high 49.000 at the Cal Quad meet on March 17. It is the first 49.000 of the 2018 season for San José State. Taylor Chan led the floor team with a 9.875, followed by Jasmine Henley and Stephanie Relova at 9.800, Chelsey Andrada at 9.775 and Josalyn Ray at 9.750.

BEAM TEAM SHINES AT SEATTLE PACIFIC
The Spartans scored a season-best 48.825 on beam in the final rotation at Seattle Pacific. Taylor Chan led the team with a  9.850, followed by Chelsey Andrada and Stephanie Relova at 9.800. Tia Gin had a season-best 9.750, Carli Orcutt added a 9.625, while Josalyn Ray had a 9.125.

VAULT TEAM POSTED SOLID SCORES
The Spartan vault team recorded a season-best 48.475 twice this season - in a home meet with Boise State and UC Davis and at Sacramento State. At the home meet, Chelsey Andrada led the team as she tied her career high with a 9.875. The reigning MPSF Vault Champion, her score tied the third-highest score in school history. At Sacramento State, Carli Orcutt won her first collegiate event title as she led the Spartans with a 9.800. 

BARS TEAM SHINES IN HOME MEET
The Spartan bars team scored a season-best 48.825 in a home meet with New Hampshire and Sacramento State on February 15. Kaprece Nadonza led the team with a 9.875 to tie for first place. She was followed by Stephanie Relova at 9.825, Nikki Duggan at 9.775, Carli Orcutt at 9.725, Taylor Chan at 9.625 and Tia Gin at 9.400.
