Spartans Sixth At Oregon Duck Invitational Men's Golf

Creswell, Ore.----- Bryce Wortman's final round three-under 69 was one of only four sub-70 scores leading San José State University to a sixth place finish at the Oregon Duck Invitational men's golf tournament.

Wortman was the only player in the 88-man field to post a bogey-free round on the par 72, 7,145-yard Emerald Valley Golf Club course with his last 18 holes.  He reached three-under par after nine holes and ran off a string of nine pars the rest of the way to finish tied for a career best 16th at 220.

Teammate Kevin Velo made it three straight even par 72's for a 216. He finished in a three-way tie for fifth place, five strokes behind tournament medalist Ryan Gronlund who matched Wortman's 69 for a 211 total. Velo now has matched par or bettered par in 10 of 12 rounds this spring and had his third consecutive top-five finish. Second-round leader Cameron Kaneko of Hawaii shot an even par 72 to finish second at 212.

Behind Wortman and Velo, the Spartans posted the third best team score of the final round with a four-over par 292 to finish an 885 total.

Second-round co-leader Oregon State pulled away from Oregon with a four-under par 284 and an 861 total to win the team trophy. Oregon was second at 871. Boise State at 875, Seattle University at 882 and Nevada at 884 also finished ahead of San Jose State.

Riding the crest of a third-place finish at the Bandon Dunes Championship and the sixth at the Duck Invitational, San Jose State closes out a busy month at The Goodwin hosted by Stanford. The 54-hole tournament begins Thursday, March 28, at the Stanford University golf course.
