Spartans Drop Doubleheader At Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich.  –  San Jose State baseball dropped both games of a Wednesday doubleheader against nonconference opponent Michigan in Ann Arbor by finals of 1-0 and 3-0, respectively, at Ray Fisher Stadium.

The Spartans outhit the Wolverines over both games 9-6, but was unable to provide any run support for starting pitchers Ben Polack and Connor Konishi.

Game one saw Polack carry a shutout into the fifth inning before the Wolverines scored the game's lone run on a sacrifice fly to right field. The freshman southpaw pitched all 6.0 innings scattering four hits with three walks issued and a pair of strikeouts.

In game two it was Konishi that got the start on the bump and he pitched 3.2 innings of work with just two hits allowed, but a three-run third inning gave Michigan the lead that would not be relinquished.

In the third inning, Michigan's Brewer reached base and advanced all the way to third after Spartans centerfielder Kellen Strahm misplayed the ball. One batter later, Brewer scored on a single down the line in left field. After a walk, a double to the gap in left-center plated two more for the 3-0 lead.

Konishi was lifted for Nicholas Morales, who worked 1.2 innings of scoreless ball before Zach Wallace pitched the final inning in a spotless seventh inning.

With the loss, SJSU dropped to 14-10 overall and still sit at 8-4 in Mountain West play. Michigan improved to 17-7.

The Spartans will continue their Midwest tour on Friday as they begin a three-game weekend series at Northwestern.
