Big Day For Josh Oliver At NFL Combine

Indianapolis, Ind.----- For those still wondering who San Jose State University Josh Oliver is, he was on full display, Saturday, March 2, during the tight end drills of the 2019 National Football League Combine.

The Paso Robles, Calif., product was measured at 6-foot-5, 249 pounds, a pound off of his listed playing weight of 250 pounds during the 2018 season when he caught 56 passes for 709 yards and four touchdowns and was a first-team All-Mountain West selection.

At the NFL Combine, he was in the top-10 among the 21 participating tight ends in five of the seven tests:

  • Bench press – tied for 2nd with 22 repetitions
  • 40-yard dash – tied for 3rd in 4.63
  • Standing long jump – tied for 6th with a leap of 9-feet-9
  • Vertical leap – 7th with a leap of 34 inches
  • Long shuttle run – 8th in 12.01
  • 3-cone drill – tied for 11th in 7.21
  • 5-10-5 shuttle – 15th in 4.47

Oliver and 11 other tight ends participated in all seven drills. He was one of five to finish in the top-10 in at least five of the seven drills.

Josh Oliver, TE, San Jose State – This April will mark a full decade since a member of the Spartans was selected among the top 100 in an NFL draft but Oliver took a huge step in accomplishing this feat Saturday, wowing during timed drills, as well as the positional workout. The 6-5, 249 pounder was clocked at 4.63 seconds (third among tight ends) and is bigger than each of the men who timed faster. He finished tied for second with 22 reps of 225 pounds, a respectable 34" vertical jump and made a sparkling spin and one-handed grab during his un-timed portion of the workout.

Don't sleep on Josh Oliver (247sports.com/Denver Broncos)

Josh Oliver is a TE prospect flying under the radar. But he's a great weapon to create mismatches with linebackers and safeties.

He's got a high football IQ, and was a team captain at San Jose State. Kind of sounds like the type of prospect the (Denver) Broncos value nowadays.

Oliver talked to me about why TEs who can challenge the seam are so important in the NFL, and believes that he's one that can bring that element to a pro offense. He confirmed that he has met with the Broncos' TEs Coach Wade Harman informally at the Combine.
