Spartans Can’t Keep Up With Hot-Shooting Aztecs

SAN DIEGO – Junior forward Michael Steadman tallied his third-straight double-double, but it wasn't enough as San Jose State men's basketball fell to San Diego State 84-56 Saturday in Viejas Arena. The Spartans shot 32 percent for the night while the Aztecs converted 48 percent.

The teams exchanged baskets for the first few minutes of the contest with Steadman scoring six early points before the first media timeout. The Aztecs were red-hot from 3-point range early making five treys before the second media timeout at 11:44. San Diego State used a 14-2 run to take an 11 point lead at 22-11, however the Spartans fought back with a quick 7-0 run capped by Seneca Knight's second trey of the evening.

SDSU finished the first half shooting 52 percent from the field and took a 41-29 lead into the locker room.

SJSU returned for the second half and quickly cut the deficit to nine after back-to-back treys by Zach Chappell and Noah Baumann with 17:45 remaining, but that was as close as the Spartans would get. The Aztecs led by as many as 31 points thanks in part to 14 3-pointers. On the other end, SJSU totaled just five treys.

Steadman finished the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The double-double was his 10th of the season, which is the third-most in the conference.

Chappell finished with a team-high 14 points and dished out a team-high five assists without committing a turnover. Knight finished with 12 points  while Baumann chipped in nine points including a trey to extended his school record of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 26 games. Ashtin Chastain pulled down eight boards.

Five Aztecs finished in double figure scoring led by Jeremy Hensley's 15. The Spartans pulled down 39 rebounds to SDSU's 41. Turnovers were close as well with SJSU committing 15 to the Aztecs' 12.
