Santa Clara, Calif.——San Jose State freshman Olga Descalzi Portell led all players matching her single-match season-high of five goals in an 11-7 non-conference women's water polo win against Santa Clara University.
Descalzi Portell needed just six shots to score five times. Four of her five goals were even-strength scores for the Spartans (4-4).
Host Santa Clara (4-9) led, 3-2, after the first quarter, but in a span of 2:07 at the start of the second quarter, San Jose State scored three consecutive goals to take the lead for good.
Sophomore Tyanna Supreme scored her two goals during this Spartan rally. In between, Caroline Kerwin took a feed from Descalzi Portell and scored her only goal of the match giving San Jose State a 4-3 advantage, its first lead of the match.
Matilda Moore, with two goals, and Lili Urvari, with a key third-period power play goal, also scored for the Spartans.
Spartan goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with seven saves. The San Jose State defense also kept Santa Clara off the scoreboard twice when the Broncos had a 6-on-4 power play with heady field play in front of Henry. Santa Clara goalkeeper Lydia Dadd was credited with five saves.
The Spartans return to action next weekend for their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference match this season against USC on Friday, March 8. They continue the weekend playing California Baptist and Concordia University on Saturday, March 9, in the CBU Invite.
