Tempe, Ariz.----- The San Jose State University women's water polo team had its best day of the 2019 season defeating #8-Arizona State, 9-7, and unranked Siena, 17-6, at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
The #19-ranked Spartans (9-10, 1-2 MPSF) beat a top-10 ranked team and defeated a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference opponent for the first time since the 2017 season. Sierra Painter, who led the Spartans with three goals, scored the go-ahead goal at the 7:20 mark. Matilda Moore and Tyanna Supreme, each with two goals in the match, and Jacqui Maisey and Olga Descalzi Portell also scored in the deciding stanza to give the Spartans a 7-4 lead going into the final quarter.
San Jose State won the match in part with effective power-play defense. Arizona State was just 2-of-12 in 6-on-5 opportunities.
Spartan goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with four saves in the team's biggest win of the season.
San Jose State made it a sweep taking control of its match against Siena in the second quarter with another five-goal outburst and went into halftime with a commanding 6-3 lead. The Spartans built a 12-5 advantage after three quarters.
