Third Quarter Cowgirls Run Dooms Spartans At Wyoming

Laramie, Wyo. – The San José State women's basketball team was down five points early in the third quarter, but the Wyoming Cowgirls went on a 17-4 run and never looked back en route to a 85-56 win over the Spartans on Monday night.
 
Raziya Potter's 14 points and six rebounds led the Spartans.  Danae Marquez had nine points, three rebounds and three assists.  Mikaylah Wilson and Megan Anderson had seven points and three assists each and Fieme'a Hafoka added six points and four rebounds.
 
Alexis Harris had the team's one block in the game.  It was the 47th of junior's career and moved her into a tie for 21st place on the program's career blocked shots list.  Senior Andrea Kohlhaas' fourth quarter three-pointer was the 54th of her career.  She enters her final regular-season game tied for 22nd place on the Spartans all-time three-point field goal list.
 
Wyoming (20-6, 13-4 MW) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first minute and a half.  Wilson's first bucket of the game stopped the Cowgirls run, but by the 5:12 mark the lead was up to 10 points, 17-7.  A three-point play from Potter, with 4:06 to go, got the Spartans to within 17-10, but an 8-5 run to close the period gave Wyoming a 25-15 lead after 10 minutes. 
 
San José State (5-23, 4-13 MW) shot 41.7 percent (5-of-12) in the first quarter and 41.2 percent (21-of-51) for the game, but the Cowgirls were even better.  They hit on 50.8 percent (33-of-65) of their shots in the game and, including a 9-of-15 (60.0 percent) in what turned out to be the crucial third quarter.
 
Coming out of the locker room after halftime, Hafoka hit a jumper at the 9:14 mark to get the Spartans to within five at 37-32.  Wyoming then went on its 17-4 run over the next five minutes to push the lead to 18 points, 54-36, and finished the period with a 20-point lead, 62-42.
 
A pair of Hafoka free throws and an Anderson layup with 8:19 to play got the lead down to 17 points.  But from there Wyoming extended its advantage out to 23 points, on an 8-0 run, and won by 29, 85-56.  
 
Two seniors led the Cowgirls.  Marta Gomez led all scorers 21 points and Bailee Cotton had a 12-point, 12-rebound double double.
 
San José State wraps up the regular season on Thursday when it hosts Fresno State in The Event Center. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m. with a senior ceremony for Andrea Kohlhaas scheduled for approximately 6:45 p.m.
