#19-Spartans Stopped By #1-USC, 22-8

Los Angeles, Calif.----- It had been five years since San Jose State had three women's water polo players score two or more goals in a game against the University of Southern California.

Freshman Olga Descalzi Portell with three and Tyanna Supreme and Lili Urvari with two each accounted for seven of the #19-ranked Spartans' eight goals.

Despite San Jose State's best team scoring output against USC in a match since 2014, the #1-ranked Trojans outscored the Spartans, 22-8, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest. For #1-ranked  USC (19-0, 2-0 MPSF), it was the Trojans' 35th consecutive win dating back to the 2018 season.

Even though the Spartans (4-5, 0-1 MPSF) joined Cal and Stanford as the third USC opponent in the last four matches to score eight times against the Trojans, San Jose State missed out on chances to add to their total. The Spartans went 1-for-10 in power-play situations.  The Trojans came into the match yielding just 3.35 goals per match and had two shutouts this season.

USC was 7-of-8 on power plays in its win. USC's leading scorer, Maud Megens, scored six times needing only six shots in the win. Bayley Weber added three more scores for the Trojans, who jumped out to 5-0 lead before a Supreme score with 3:24 in the first quarter put San Jose State on the scoreboard.

Hannah Henry played the first half for the Spartans and was credited with four saves. Anna Maria Luther played for the second time this season and finished up in goal for San Jose State with two saves.

San Jose State concludes its weekend in Southern California at the Lancer Invite on March 9 hosted by Cal Baptist. The Spartans take on host Cal Baptist at 9:00 a.m. and Concordia of Irvine at Noon. The Cal Baptist match will be streamed on www.cbulancers.com.
