San Diego, Calif.—The Spartan softball team used a four-run fourth inning, and Jenessa Ullegue pitched her ninth complete game of the season as San José State won 6-2 at San Diego State Saturday night in a Mountain West matchup.
After giving up a run to the Aztecs in the second inning, San José State scored four times on four hits in the fourth inning. Kristen Heffley started the inning with a double to right center. After an SDSU pitching change, Alyssa Avila was hit by a pitch. With one out, Jacey Phipps singled to left field to score Taylor Tiger who was running for Avila. Rayohna Sagapolu, who earlier in the inning reached base on a fielder's choice, scored on a wild pitch.
Madison Aurin then came to the plate and hit her fourth home run of the season to score two. Aurin moved into a tie for third place on the San José State career home run list as she hit the 27th of her Spartan career, tying with Kara Kanney.
San José State added two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Ullegue drew a walk, and with two outs, Alyssa Graham hit her third home run of the season to left center.
Ullegue improved her record to 12-3 on the season as she allowed just three hits and two runs, striking out seven while walking three. At the plate, she went 1-for-2 with a two walks and a run scored.
San José State improves to 27-13 overall and 7-4 in the MW. The two teams finish the series Sunday afternoon with a noon game.
