Honolulu, Hawaii—The Spartan beach volleyball team fought hard in the final two duals of the season as San José State finished fourth at the Queen's Cup in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Spartans fell to Hawaii, 5-0, and Washington, 4-1.
In the semifinal match against the Rainbow Wahine, two of Spartan matches went three sets. Caitlin Bettenay and Tabea Schwarz won the second set 21-17 to force a third set but fell 15-7 in the third set. Julia Golbeck and Ciara Reistad also won their second set 21-15 and lost 15-13 in the third set.
The Spartans did not give up in the third-place match against Washington as four of the five matches went three sets. Sarah Smevog and Ryann Thomison recorded the only Spartan point of the dual by wining 21-13, 19-21, 16-14. Bettenay and Schwarz won the first set 23-21 and fought in losing third set 15-13. Luiza Andrade and Giulia Gávio won 21-18 and narrowly missed winning the third set, 15-13. Golbeck and Reistad won their first set 21-17 and fell 15-10 in the third.
San José State finishes the 2019 season with an 11-12 record and the most wins in a season. Two pairs ended the season with a winning record – Thaliana Grajeda and Kaitlynn Zdroik at 12-11 and Julia Golbeck and Sarah Smevog at 15-4. Bettenay and Schwarz were 10-13, while Andrade and Gávio finished 9-13.
