Spartans Stay In 1st At 73rd Western Intercollegiate

Santa Cruz, Calif.----- San Jose State University senior Kevin Velo was one of two players in the field to shoot a second-round best four-under par 66 as the Spartans stayed in first place for the team championship of the 73rd Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf men's golf tournament.

San Jose State has a team total of one-under par 699 and holds a one-shot lead over Stanford, which has a 700. The Cardinal turned in the low team score of the second round with a four-under par 346.

Southern California and California are tied for third at 705. Oregon and Pepperdine are tied for fifth at 707 in the 13-team field. Host San Jose State is heading into the final round as the team leader for the first time since 1998.

Velo's 66 consisted of five birdies and one bogey and gave him a 36-hole total of five-under 135 on the par 70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club. He pulled even with teammate and first-round co-leader Sean Yu, who had a counting 71 towards the Spartans' team total in round two. San Jose State also counted Ben Campbell's 71, Matt Heitel's 72 and one of the 73's from Nate Jetter and Bryce Wortman.

The 135's from Velo and Yu, Pepperdine's Clay Feagler and USC's Cameron Henry playing as an individual entry are good for a second-place for tie in the battle for individual honors and the coveted blue jacket to the winner.

Stanford's Isaiah Salinda, one of the three first-round co-leaders with San Jose State's Yu and USC's Justin Suh, has the individual lead at 132. Salinda fired a second-round 68 while Suh, the 2017 Western Intercollegiate medalist, slipped to a 74 and is in eighth place at 138. Only 10 players in the 84-player field are under par headed into the final round on Wednesday, April 17.

Arizona's Tianlang Guan matched Velo for the low score in the second round with his 66 and is tied for 38th at 145.
