Santa Cruz, Calif.----- San Jose State University had its best team and individual finishes in years at the 73rd Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf men's golf tournament.

Holding the lead going into the final 18 holes, the Spartans were in first place at various stages of the day, and placed third in the 13-team field with a one-under par 1,051 total in the six-score-five format. The last time San Jose State finished in the top-five of a Western Intercollegiate was a fourth-place finish in 2010.

Stanford, second after 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament at the par 70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club, turned in the best one-round team score of the tournament with a 10-under 340 for a 1,040 total. The Cardinal outlasted California  at 1,046, which was one of the three teams to be in first place during the final round.

#6-ranked Southern California, the highest ranked team in the field, finished one stroke behind San Jose State at 1,052. San Jose State finished ahead of five teams, USC, Pepperdine (19), Oregon (39) Arizona (44), and Colorado State (46) ranked in GolfStat's top-50. San Jose State is ranked #52 in the April 17 GolfStat national rankings.

The Spartans were led by junior Sean Yu, who finished second after losing a five-hole, sudden-death playoff to Stanford's Isaiah Salinda. Both players finished at eight-under par 202 and parred the first four playoff holes before Salinda drained a 7-foot birdie putt on the fifth playoff hole. Yu had rounds of 64-71-67 in his best finish as a collegiate player.

Yu's 67 was one of two San Jose State final round scores that kept the Spartans in contention for the team title until the final holes. Bryce Wortman saved his best for last with a four-under par 66 and a 215 total. Matt Heitel's 70 in the final round also was his best round and he finished tied for 24th at 213. Kevin Velo gave San Jose State a second finisher in the top-20 with a 212, tied for 17th place.

Ben Campbell matched Wortman's 215 and Nate Jetter totaled 226.

The Spartans are next in action at the Mountain West Championship, April 26-28, in Tucson, Ariz.
