Descalzi Portell Hits 50-Goal Mark In Spartans' Loss To #1-Stanford

Stanford, Calif.---- Freshmen Matilda Moore and Olga Descalzi Portell and sophomore Natalie Hosmer accounted for San Jose State university's four goals in a 22-4 loss to #1-ranked Stanford in the final regular-season women's water polo match for both teams.
 
            Moore scored twice and Descalzi Portell and Hosmer scored one each in the match against the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) regular-season champion. For Descalzi Portell, she reached the 50-goal plateau for the season – the first Spartan since Rae Lekness (98) and Carla Toha Vilanova (53) in 2016 to score 50 times in a season.
 
            Stanford (18-1, 6-0 MPSF) scored the first three goals of the match before Moore got the Spartans (10-13, 2-4 MPSF) at the 4:33 mark of the opening quarter. The Cardinal continued to extend their lead to 12-3 at halftime and 19-3 at the end of three quarters.
 
            Hannah Henry and Anna Maria Luther each played one half in goal for San Jose State. Henry was credited with five saves in her two quarters of action; Luther, one.
 
            Makenzie Fischer and Ryann Neushel of Stanford were the leading scorers in the match with four goals each.
 
            San Jose State will begin post-season action at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship, Friday, April 26, at Stanford's Avery Aquatics Center. The Spartans face Cal in a first-round match scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
