Spartans Start Mountain West Championship In 10th Place

Tucson, Ariz.----- San Jose State University got off to a strong start on its opening nine holes, but struggled on the back side and finds itself in tenth place after the first round of the 2019 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship.
 
            The Spartans have a team score of two-over par 290 on the par 72, 7,194-yard Omni Tucson National Golf Course. San Jose State's counting scores in the five-player, score-four format making the turn was seven-under par with 11 birdies and four bogeys counting at the time. Only first-round co-leader New Mexico at 279 had a better front nine that San Jose State at 10-under par.
 
            However on the inward nine, the birdie barrage lessened to just three and a 10th-hole eagle by Velo and a preponderance of bogeys accompanied three counting double bogeys for the San Jose State 18-hole team score for the day.
 
            Colorado State is tied with New Mexico State for the lead. Boise State is a stroke back at 280. San Diego State is fourth at 281 while Fresno State and UNLV are tied for fifth at 282.
 
            Bryce Wortman was the only Spartan under par in the first round with a one-under 71 and is tied for 20th place. Sean Yu matched par 72. Kevin Velo's 73 puts him in a 34th place tie. Matt Heitel's 74 counted in the team scoring while Ben Campbell's 79 was discarded.
 
            New Mexico's Sean Carlon and Alex Lee of Fresno State share the first-round lead with five-under par 67's. Twenty-eight of the 55 players in the field posted an under-par score.
 
            The 54-hole championship continues with 18 holes on Saturday, April 27 and concludes with 18 holes on Sunday, April 28. San Jose State and Air Force will be in the opening set of twosomes starting at 7:00 a.m. (MST)/7:00 a.m. (PDT). GolfStat will provide live scoring updates.
