Stanford, Calif.----- San Jose State University's Caroline Kerwin scored the first goal of the match on a power play and all-conference teammate Olga Descalzi Portell poured in four more, but the University of California went to post an 18-9 victory over the Spartans in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo tournament quarterfinal-round contest.
San Jose State's nine goals were the most the team has scored in a match against Cal (16-6) since March 14, 2015 when the Spartans (10-14) lost a 10-9 decision to the Golden Bears in a four-overtime sudden-victory MPSF contest.
In many matches, freshman Descalzi Poretell's four scores would place the second-team All-MPSF and All-MPSF Newcomer team honoree as the contest's leading scorer. Descalzi Portell, tied for fifth in the MPSF in regular season scoring, needed just six shots to score four or more times in a match for the fifth time this season.
She was one-upped by Cal first-team All-MPSF choice Emma Wright, who was perfect on the day scoring on all seven shots she attempted. Wright was on her way to equal her single-match personal best of seven goals by scoring the Golden Bears' first three goals for a 3-1 lead at the 2:36 mark of the first quarter.
Cal's three-goal advantage, 4-1 after the first quarter, stayed that way throughout the second quarter as the two teams alternated goal scoring in the highest scoring stanza of the match. Leading 10-6 at halftime, the same final score as the regular-season conference match between these teams, Cal's five third-quarter goals gave the Golden Bears' insurmountable 15-7 lead with 8:00 to go. Wright was a factor again with two goals in the third period.
Tyanna Supreme was San Jose State's second multiple-goal scorer in the match with two. Jacqui Maisey and Sierra Painter joined Descalzi Portell, Kerwin and Supreme in the scoring column for the Spartans.
Anna Maria Luther made her second start of the season for San Jose State in goal and was credited with a season-high seven saves. Hannah Henry, the team's #1-goalkeeper suffered an injury during the week, and was not available.
San Jose State concludes its season playing for fifth place in the MPSF Tournament, Sunday, April 28, at 11:00 a.m., at the Avery Aquatic Center against the winner of the April 27 match between Arizona State and Indiana.
