Spartan Men Notch Five Season Bests At Brutus Hamilton Invitational

Berkeley, Calif.----- Sprinter Cannon Yates accounted for two of the five season bests by a San Jose State University men's entry at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational track and field meet.
 
            A freshman from San Jose, Yates posted times of 23.51 in the 200 and 52.39 in the 400 inside Edwards Stadium on the University of California campus. It is the second consecutive week Yates has lowered his times in the 200 and 400.
 
            Middle distance runners Luis Chavez and Nicholas Armas also recorded season bests during the two-day meet. Chavez was the top 1,500-meter runner in a field of 14 entries covering the distance in 3:56.91.  Armas posted his first sub 2:00 time in the 800 at 1:59.08.
 
            Distance runner Evaristo Mateo turned in a third-place finish in the 5000 meters in 15:15.39, just over nine seconds faster than his previous season best of 15:24.42.
           
            Junior Edgar Bonilla joined Chavez as Brutus Hamilton Invitational winners from San Jose State. Bonilla raced in his first 800-meter race of the season and posted a best time of 1:55.55 in a field of 19 entries. His time edged out Santa Clara's Christian Raslowsky, who was timed in 1:55.81.
 
            The Spartans are next in action at the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 8-11, in Fresno.
