Tucson, Ariz.----- San Jose State University's goal of a final-round Mountain West Men's Golf Championship rally did not materialize and the Spartans finished ninth out of 11 teams.
San Jose State posted a 54-hole total of one-over par 865 on the par 72, 7,194-yard Omni Tucson National golf course. In a conference with six teams including San Jose State in GolfStat's top-75 rankings, New Mexico, one of those teams and the first-round co-leader, has the best team score of the final round, a 14-par 274, to finish at 831.
Colorado State was second with an 834 followed by Fresno State at 838, UNLV at 839, and San Diego State at 840 to round out the top-five teams.
Kevin Velo was the top individual finisher for San Jose State. After a final round 72, he finished 19th at five-under par 211. Bryce Wortman also matched par in the final round and tied for 29th at even par 216. Sean Yu tied for 42nd at 221; Matt Heitel, tied for 46th at 222; and Ben Campbell was 49th at 224 in the 55-player field.
New Mexico's Galven Green took home medalist honors with a birdie on the third playoff hole. He and teammate Sean Carlon, the first-round leader and second-round co-leader, tied after 54 holes at 13-under par 203.
The Spartans, ranked 49th nationally in the most recent GolfStat poll, will wait for word on NCAA Regional Championship action. There will be 81 teams participating in six regionals, May 13-15. The closest regional host to San Jose State is Stanford. Other regional championship sites are Myrtle Beach, S.C., Athens, Ga., Louisville, Ky., Austin, Texas, and Pullman, Wash.
The top-five teams and the two leading individual players not affiliated with those teams at each NCAA Regional Championship will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 24-29, in Fayetteville, Ark.
