Well-Balanced Effort Leads Spartans To Series Sweep Over Utah State

SAN JOSE, Calif. –  San Jose State softball clicked on all fronts in the series finale vs. Utah State, tallying six runs on 10 hits while holding the Aggies to just three hits in a 6-3 final. With the win, the Spartans completed the series sweep and improved to 32-15, 12-6.

Freshman Jenessa Ullegue had another outstanding outing in the circle as she improved to 15-4 on the season. She struck out eight and issued just two walks in her second complete game of the weekend.

The Spartan offense struck for the game's first four runs beginning with a RBI double by Ullegue in the first inning. They then added three more runs in the third Kristen Heffley single to left field and the Aggies' left fielder mishandled her exchange allowing Rayohna Sagapolu to score. Madison Aurin, who finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, plated the next run with a RBI single and Cassidy Clark doubled to the gap in left-center to plate the final run of the inning for the 4-0 lead.

Utah State (13-28, 4-15) fought back in the fourth inning as a leadoff walk broke up Ullegue's perfect game bid. Two batters later, the Aggies found the scoreboard with one swing of the bat as Kennedy Hira smacked a three-run home run to center field to bring the score to 4-3.

SJSU then turned to the long ball themselves for insurance in the sixth as Makayla Englestad smoked a two-run homer over the wall in right to stretch the lead to 6-3.

The Spartans finished with 10 hits led by Aurin and Heffley's two-hit afternoons. Hira was Utah State's most productive player finishing with two of their three hits.

SJSU returns to action Friday through Sunday in a weekend series against New Mexico in Albuquerque.
