SJSU Baseball’s Comeback Bid Comes Up Short

THIBODAUX, La. –  San Jose State baseball scored six runs in the final four innings, but was unable to score enough to overcome Nicholls State's hot start as the Spartans fell victim to the series sweep in a 10-7 loss Sunday at Meyer Diamond.

Nicholls State (23-21) jumped out to a huge 9-1 lead through three innings after plating four runs in the first, one in the second and five in the third inning. Fortunately, the Spartans were able to hold the Colonels at bay for the remainder of the contest to begin building a comeback.

SJSU's first run came across in the third inning as Brandon Peterson plated Anders Davidson on a RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 5-1 before Nicholls State exploded for five runs in the home half of the inning.

Davidson finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI.

The Spartans (18-26) put up three runs in both the fifth and eighth innings to cut into the lead. Aaron Pleschner doubled home the first two runs in the fifth and came home to score himself on a RBI single by Blake Berry. Pleschner finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

In the eighth, it was Davidson that plated the first run on a RBI single that scored Jack Colette. Pleschner tacked on his third RBI of the game with a single to right-center and Peterson brought home another with a RBI infield single for what would prove to be the game's final run.

The Spartans' final attempt to complete the comeback in the ninth started well with two runners reaching safely, however a double play quickly put SJSU in danger even though Blake Berry advanced to third on the play. A strikeout left him stranded there to end the game.

Jonathan Clark made the start on the bump and went 7.0 innings with five strikeouts. He was charged with the loss to drop to 2-2. The Colonels Matthew Harrison got the win to improve to 2-0.

SJSU returns to the diamond tomorrow in their final nonconference game of the season as they host the Oregon Ducks for a 1:30 first pitch at Excite Ballpark.
