CHAN QUALIFIES AS ALL-AROUNDER AT CORVALLIS REGIONAL
San José State junior Taylor Chan will compete at NCAA Regional competition for the third consecutive season. She has been selected as an all-around competitor for the Second Round of the Corvallis Regional. Chan will compete in the second session on Friday beginning at 7 p.m., and will rotate with Stanford.



The top two teams and the top all-around competitor (who is not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships, April 19-20 in Fort Worth, Texas. In addition, the top event specialist at each regional site who is not part of an advancing team or all-around competitor, will advance to the national championships in that event only.

The last time a Spartan advanced to the NCAA Championships was 2011 when Katie Valleau tied for first on the floor at the Oregon State Regional.  She then competed on floor at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Cleveland.  The last time a Spartan all-arounder competed at the NCAA Championships was 2009 when Veronica Porte and Thomasina Wallace advanced from the NCAA West Regional.

SPARTAN COACHING STAFF
Head coach Joanne Bowers is in her first season at the helm of the San José State program. She is the sixth head coach in the program's now 50-year history in August of 2018.  From 2007 to 2016, Bowers was the head women's gymnastics coach at the University of Washington.

James Williams and Jeffrey Langenstein are in their first seasons as assistant coaches for the Spartans after joining the program in September of 2018. Chelsea Spomer is in her second year with the program, serving as the director of operations for the 2019 season.

CHAN AT THE NCAA REGIONALS
This will be the third consecutive regional appearance for Taylor Chan. Her freshman year, 2017, she qualified as a floor specialist and was an alternate on beam at the NCAA Seattle Regional. She finished tied for 29th with a 9.700 on floor.

Last year, 2018, she competed at the NCAA Salt Lake City Regional on the vault and floor. She tied for sixth on floor with a 9.900 and 11th on vault With a 9.825.

Taylor Chan received MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors twice this year. At Boise State on January 13, Chan tied her career-best score in the all-around with a 39.175. Chan led the team on the bars with a 9.800, the beam with a 9.825 and the floor with a 9.800. She tied for second in the all-around, tied for third on floor and tied for fourth on beam.

At the NorCal Classic on January 6, Chan finished second in the all-around at the NorCal Classic with a 39.025. Chan tied for first on floor with a 9.900, and added a 9.800 on beam, 9.700 on vault and 9.625 on bars. 

CHAN 9.900 = SIX FLOOR WINS

likes to win on the floor when she scores a 9.900. In six of the seven meets she scored a 9.900, she won or tied for first. Her latest 9.900 on floor came at the MPSF Championships on March 23.

A LOOK BACK AT THE MPSF CHAMPIONSHIPS

On a night of season and career highs, the San José State women's gymnastics team posted its 11th-best team score in school history, and Taylor Chan won the all-around title at the 2019 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships hosted by Seattle Pacific on March 23.

For the second consecutive season, a Spartan won the MPSF All-Around title as Chan scored a career-best 39.300.  She is the fourth Spartan to win the MPSF all-around title – Kaitlin Won in 2018, Cami Guyer in 2015 and Shirla Choy in 2003. Chan finished tied for second on floor with a 9.900, third on beam at 9.850, tied for sixth on vault at 9.775 and tied for 15th on bars at 9.775.

San José State scored a season-high 195.450 at the meet, ranking 11th all-time in school history and is the first time a Spartan team has achieved that score. It is also the third consecutive season that the Spartans have saved their best team score for the final meet of the year.

The Spartans started the night on beam, tying for the ninth-best beam team score in school history with a 48.950. Chan led the team with a season-high 9.850. After a bye, the Spartans had another season-best with a 49.050 on floor, led again by Chan's 9.900. 

The vault team came through with a 48.600, while, the bars team came out with a season-best 48.850, the 11th-best bars score in school history. 

ALL-MPSF HONORS
The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced the 2019 Women's Gymnastics All-MPSF honors.  Four San José State women's gymnasts received 10 All-MPSF recognitions, based on each gymnasts national qualifying score as of March 18.

Taylor Chan received five honors to lead the team as she was named first team on vault, beam, floor and all-around and second team on bars.

Chelsey Andrada, the 2018 MPSF Vault Champion, was named first team on vault on beam and second team on floor.

Stephanie Relova was first team on bars and second team on beam. Nikki Duggan earned her first all-conference award as she was second team on bars.
