Chan, Mitchel Honored For March Achievements

San José State University women's gymnast Taylor Chan and baseball player Andrew Mitchel are the Student-Athletes of the Month for March, presented by O'Connor Hospital.

Chan won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Around Championship at the conference meet on March 23. She scored a career-best 39.300 in the win. At the championships, Chan finished first in the all-around, second on floor, third on beam and sixth on the vault. She was named a first team All-MPSF selection on vault, beam, floor and the all-around and a second team honoree on bars. For the month, she won a total of six event titles – vault, beam, floor and all-around (3). Chan was also selected to compete as an all-around competitor at the NCAA Corvallis Regional the first weekend in April.

Mitchel made five appearances in March as he struck out 42 batters and held opposing bats to just a .170 average against in 29.2 innings of work. His best game by far came in the series opener vs. the Air Force Falcons on March 8. The southpaw from Atwater, Calif., struck out an incredible 18 batters, the second-most in a nine-inning game in school history, while giving up just four hits in a complete game win. Mitchel's 18 strikeouts are the most by any player in the NCAA so far this season, and are the second-most in Mountain West history behind Stephen Strasburg, who struck out 23 batters on April 11, 2008 against Utah. Mitchel picked up Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honors for the effort.
