San Jose, Calif.—Spartan softball senior Madison Aurin took matters into her own hands Friday, pitching, hitting and defensively as San José State shut out Nevada, 3-0, for the second consecutive day.
Aurin pitched her second complete game of the season as she improved her record to 6-2. She allowed only four hits, one walk and one strikeout in 27 batters faced. Aurin dropped her season ERA to 2.00.
At the plate, Aurin made her presence know in the third inning as she hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead, her fifth home run of the season.
Defensively, she helped herself out by recording a career-best six assists. Aurin assisted on the final outs in the first, second, third and fifth innings.
The Spartans added a run in the sixth inning as the first three batters reached base before an out was recorded. With one out, pinch hitter Jacey Phipps drew a bases loaded walk to drive in Cassidy Clark for San José State's final run of the game.
Alyssa Graham and Alyssa Avila led the Spartans in hitting as each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
San José State improves to 37-15 on the season and 17-6 in the Mountain West, while Nevada falls to 26-25 overall and 10-13 in the MW. The two teams finish the series on Saturday with a game at noon. It is the final home game for four Spartan seniors – Kaelin Amrein, Kristen Heffley, Avila and Aurin. The four seniors will be honored after the games.
