San Jose, Calif.—An era came to an end at Spartan Softball Field on Saturday as four San José State softball seniors played in the final regular season game and their final home game.
Kaelin Amrein, Madison Aurin, Alyssa Avila and Kristen Heffley each started and contributed in the team's final game of the season. Aurin had the highlight of the day as she hit a ground-rule double which bounced over the fence and below the scoreboard in center field in the first inning. She went 2-for-4 on the day and almost sent the crowd home happy but a fly ball to left center died and was caught short of the fence.
Amrein went 2-for-3 on the day with singles in the second and fourth innings, while Avila was 0-2 with a walk to load the bases in the fourth inning. Heffley went 1-for-4 at the plate, her hit coming in the top of the seventh inning to give the Spartans a chance to score before Aurin hit the fly ball.
However, the Spartans seniors suffered just their 16th loss of the season as San José State fell to Nevada 2-1. The team finishes the season with a 37-16 overall record and in second place in the Mountain West with a 17-7 record.
San José State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Cassidy Clark started the inning with a single up the middle. She advanced to second on an Arianna Miranda walk and scored as Amrein bunted for a single and the Wolf Pack player threw the ball away trying to get Amrein at first.
SJSU left nine runners on base, leaving the bases loaded in the fourth inning and two on the second inning.
Jenessa Ullegue pitched a complete game in the circle for SJSU, allowing just four hits and striking out three. Her record falls to 16-5 on the season.
The Spartans will watch ESPN2 Sunday night along with the rest of the country to see which 64 teams will be selected to the 2019 NCAA DI Women's College World Series Bracket. Regional action will be held May 17-19, followed by Super Regionals May 23-26 and the Women's College World Series May 30-June 5.
