Senior Brenna Bushey, who completed her career as the school recordholder in the 50 and 100 butterfly and earned All-Mountain West honors in two events at the 2019 conference meet, was named the Swimmer of the Year at the San Jose State University women's swimming and diving season-ending awards dinner.
Bushey finished fourth in the 100 butterfly and helped the 200 freestyle relay team place third at the Mountain West Championship. At the National Invitational Championships in Cleveland, Ohio, she was second in the 100 fly, third in the 50 fly, fourth in the 50 backstroke, swam a leg on the Spartans' 200 freestyle relay that finished fourth, the 400 medley relay that took fifth place, and the 400 freestyle relay that placed sixth.
Senior Eri Tamada was named the team's Diver of the Year. Tamada had season bests of 230.18 on the 1-meter board and 213.32 on the 3-meter board.
Freshman Madelyn Sailors took home Rookie of the Year and the "Most Improved Award." Sailors joined Bushey on the Spartans' 200 free relay foursome at the National Invitational and the Mountain West Championships. At the Mountain West Championships, San Jose State placed third.
Senior Taylor Lehr, an applied mathematics major, received the Scholar-Athlete Award and shared the Spartan Award with Bushey and Kendal Guy.
The Performance of the Year Awards went to Bushey for school record 52.76 in the 100 fly preliminary round of the Mountain West Championship and to the 200 freestyle relay team of Antoinette Loya, Bushey, Sailors and Lehr, that touched the pad third in a 1:31.75 clocking good for #4 on the all-time San Jose State list.
Violani Auva'a, Jamie Dodd and Madison Grimes were announced as team captains for the 2019-20 season succeeding Bushey, Guy and Lehr.
