Jennifer Sandoval Sets 5,000 Meters School Record At NCAA Meet

Sacramento, Calif.----- Jennifer Sandoval broke her own San Jose State University record in the 5000 meters on the final night of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Preliminary Round Championships.

Sandoval posted a time of 16:21.42, more than two seconds faster than her previous school record of 16:23.72 set at the 2019 Cardinal Classic on April 19.

The junior from Fontana, Calif., finished in 28th place overall and 16th in her heat.

Teammate Jeanette Zambrano also was in the second heat with Sandoval and placed 19th in the heat and 38th overall. Zambrano was timed in 16:38.62.

This season, the 5000 meters school record changed three times with Zambrano taking over the top spot from Sandoval in the first heat of the Cardinal Classic. Later that evening, Sandoval regained the school record. Sandoval finishes the 2019 outdoor season owning both the 5000 and 10,000 meter school records – the same as at the end of the 2018 outdoor season.

Boise State's Allie Ostrander posted the fastest time among the 48 runners with a 15:30.94. New Mexico's Weini Kelati was first in the second heat that included Sandoval and Zambrano with her time of 15:93.64.

The #12 qualifying time in the 5000 for the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas next month was a 15:48.08 turned in by Southern Utah's Angie Nickerson.
