Colorado Springs. Colo.----- San Jose State University senior Kevin Velo and junior Sean Yu were two of the 12 student-athletes named to the 2019 All-Mountain West team for men's golf. The recognition was through a vote by the 11 conference men's golf head coaches.
Velo leads the team in stroke average at 71.40. In 11 tournaments this season, he has eight top-20 individual finishes. Of those eight tournaments, he was in the top-10 four times. A model of consistency, he leads the team in rounds under par with 14, rounds of level par at eight and total rounds of par or better golf with 22.
His best finish this season was a second at the Bandon Dunes Championship with a three-under par 213. Velo was the most consistent player in the field with none of his three rounds containing an over-par total.
In the May 1 GolfStat report, he is ranked 148th nationally among more than 1,200 NCAA Division I players.
Yu is close behind Velo in stroke average at 71.84. He has six top-20 finishes topped by a second-place finish at eight under par 202 at the 73rd Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf. In 32 rounds, Yu has been under par 13 times and matched par on three other occasions. He is ranked 192nd nationally in the GolfStat rankings.
"I'm proud that Kevin and Sean were recognized for what they've done and who they are. They have grown a great deal and I'm excited for their future," said San Jose State University men's golf head coach John Kennaday.
Velo, Yu and the Spartans continue their season, May 13-15, at the NCAA Regional Championship in Austin, Texas. The Spartans are one of 14 teams in the Austin Regional. The top-five teams in the regional will advance to the 30-team NCAA Championships, May 24-29, in Fayetteville, Ark.
