Spartans Fall In 11 Innings In Game One at SDSU

SAN DIEGO, Calif. –  San Jose State baseball dropped the first game at San Diego State as the Aztecs laced a two-run single in the bottom of the 11th inning to walk-off with a 7-6 victory.
 
The Spartans (19-27, 12-10) grabbed the lead in the top of the 11th on a sacrifice fly by Anders Davidson to take a 6-5 lead, but in the home half of the inning, SJSU was unable to seal the deal as Angelo Armenta delivered the game-winning single with two outs.
 
With the loss, SJSU dropped to third place in the conference standings while SDSU flipped up to second.
 
The Spartans tallied 11 hits on the night led by two-hit performances by Aaron Pleschner, Blake Berry and James Shimashita. After SDSU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, SJSU plated a pair in the second and fifth to take a 4-3 lead into the sixth when the Aztecs regained the lead with two runs. 
 
Pleschner then tied the game in the top of the seventh as he singled home Davidson. Ryan Belluomini also tried to score on the play was thrown out at the plate on the relay from right field.
 
Andrew Mitchel got the start on the bump and scattered six hits over 5.2 innings of work. He struck out six and was responsible for five runs, three earned. Justin Watland took over in the sixth and worked three scoreless innings before giving way for Fineas Del Bonta-Smith. Del Bonta-Smith (3-2) worked the final two innings and was responsible for the two runs in the 11th.
 
San Diego State reliever Casey Schmitt (3-3) picked up the win after replacing starter Justin Goosen-Brown in the sixth.
 
The Spartans get another crack at SDSU tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
