Spartans Score Season-High 10 Runs In Win At New Mexico

Albuquerque, N.M.— The San José State team scored a season-high 10 runs Friday night, and four Spartans drove in two runs each in the team's 10-4 win at New Mexico.

Scoring 10 runs is a first for this team this season and the most since March 19 when SJSU scored nine runs and eight runs respectively against Manhattan. The Spartans have been averaging just 3.61 runs per game in Mountain West play.

San José State scored four runs in the first inning, five runs in the second inning and tacked on a run in the seventh inning. In the first, Rayohna Sagapolu, Kristen Heffley and Madison Aurin started the game off with back-to-back-to-back walks to load the bases. After a Lobo pitching change and a Spartan strikeout, Cassidy Clark doubled to left field to drive in two runs. After another strikeout, Alyssa Graham drove the ball to right field for a single, and two more Spartans scored for a 4-0 lead. That ended the Spartan scoring for the first.

In the second inning, Makayla Englestad started inning by reaching base on catcher's interference. Sagapolu then drew her second walk, and Heffley reached on an error to score Engletad.  After a Spartan fly out, Ullegue singled to center field to score Sagapolu and Heffley for runs two and three. With two outs, Kaelin Amrein came to the plate and hit her second home run of the season to left field to score two and give SJSU a 9-0 lead.

San José State added a run in the seventh as Alyssa Avila hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Amrein from third. The Lobos responded with two in the bottom of the inning, but SJSU held on for the 10-4 win.

Three Spartans scored two runs in the game – Sagapolu, Heffley and Amrein. Graham and Amrein each had two of the team's seven hits, while four players drove in two runs – Ullegue, Graham, Clark and Amrein.

Caroline Bowman improved her record in the circle to 11-6 on the season as she pitched 3.1 innings of relief for the win, giving up just two hits and striking out one. She replaced Jenessa Ullegue who pitched the first 3.2 innings and allowed two unearned runs on four hits and struck out three.

San José State improves to 33-15 on the season and 13-6 in the Mountain West. The teams play game two of the series Saturday at 4 p.m. MT/3 p.m. PT.
