Sean Yu Is California State Am Medalist For Match Play Championship

Pebble Beach, Calif.----- San Jose State University rising senior Sean Yu earned stroke play medalist honors at the 108th California State Amateur men's golf championship at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club.

Yu posted scores of 68 and 66 for a 134 total, two strokes better than Thomas Hutchinson. The 2019 All-Mountain West selection notched 11 birdies and only one second-round bogey for his 36 holes.

"I like where the balance of his game is at right now," said San Jose State University men's golf coach John Kennaday.

The 156-player field was trimmed to the top-32 for the match play portion of one of the longest-standing amateur championships in the country hosted by the California Golf Association.

Yu's former teammate Kevin Velo also is in the 32-player match-play field after scores of 70 and 72 for a 142 total. A 144 even par total was good enough to earn one of the first 28 spots in the 32-player field. Ten players at one-over 145 were in a playoff for the remaining four berths.

Match play consists of 18 holes each on June 26 and 27. With eight players remaining on June 28, golfers will play in a morning round to determine the four semifinalists for an afternoon round. The two finalists will play 36 holes on June 29 for the California State Amateur championship.

Previous winners of the California State Amateur championship from San Jose State include Eli Bariteau (1948, 58), Ken Venturi (1951, 56), Bob Eastwood (1966), Joe Tamburino (1981), Steve Woods, (1994), and Ed Cuff (1997).
