San Jose, Calif.—Suzy Brookshire, a 5-7 utility player from Hollister, Calif., and a member of Team Mexico, will join the San José State softball program for the 2019-20 school year, as announced by Spartan head coach Peter Turner.
Brookshire comes to San José State from Sacramento State where she was a three-time All-Big Sky Conference honoree. She was the 2018 Big Sky Most Valuable Player after setting the program record with 18 home runs, helping the Hornets to a Big Sky Championships and an NCAA Tournament berth. This past season, she hit .303 with 12 doubles and 11 home runs and led the team with 38 RBI. Brookshire is a two-time All-Pacific Region selection (second team in 2018 and third team in 2017).
Last summer, Brookshire competed for Mexico at the 2018 Women's Softball World Championship in Chiba, Japan, where she hit .417 and helped Mexico finish with a 6-3 record. Team Mexico is ranked fifth in the current World Baseball Softball Confederation world rankings.
"We are extremely pleased to have Suzy join the Spartan program," said Turner. "We have know about her since we recruited her in high school. She will make an instant impact on our team and fill some games that will make us even stronger than last year.
"Suzy can play multiple positions for us. She is strong and powerful with tremendous athletic ability and a perfect fit to add to our power productivity."
San José State finished the 2019 season with a 37-16 overall record and 17-7 Mountain West record, good for second in the standings.
