Fineas Del Bonta-Smith Becomes Third Spartan Drafted In 2019

SAN JOSE, Calif.  – San Jose State baseball relief pitcher Fineas Del Bonta-Smith became the third Spartan to be selected in 2019 Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday as the Colorado Rockies picked him up with the 669th overall pick in the 22nd round.

Del Bonta-Smith joins day two selections Kellen Strahm and Andrew Mitchel as former Spartans to hear their named called in the draft. The trio is the most selections in a single draft for the program since 2011 when four players were picked.

Del Bonta-Smith, a native of Soquel, California, posted nine saves in 2019 in his final season as a Spartan, which is the second-most in a single season in school history. Eight of those saves came in conference play, which led the Mountain West. The right-hander finished the season with a 4.85 ERA and 3-3 record while striking out 31 batters against just 11 walks in 22 appearances.

Del Bonta-Smith concluded his Spartan career second on the all-time saves list with 14.

A future Spartan also heard his name called on the final day of the draft. Right-handed pitcher Anders Tolhurst was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays with 687th pick in the 23rd round.

Tolhurst spent last season playing for Grossmont College where he posted a 6-2 record with a 3.91 ERA and 83 strikeouts as a freshman. Tolhurst is signed on to join the Spartans as part of their 2019-20 signing class.
