SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose State women's tennis has signed a pair of elite players as part of their 2019-20 class. 2018 Spanish doubles championship semifinalist Lara Marco Mas from Vila-real, Spain, and four-time Bulgarian national champion Rozalina Youseva from Sofia, Bulgaria have signed on to play for the Spartans as incoming freshmen this upcoming season. Head coach Chad Skorupka made the announcement.
"Lara and Rozalina both have big forehands to control the point and are comfortable with finishing points at the net, Skorupka said. "We are looking forward to having them join the Spartans this August."
Marco Mas currently ranks No. 64 in the Spanish rankings. In 2018, she not only was a semifinalist for the doubles championship, but also won the absolute doubles championship of the Valencian Community and was the runner-up for the absolute teams of the Valencian Community. Marco Mas also competed in the Master Marca Jovenes Promesas and the Master Valencia Open 500 Promesas.
Youseva brings a wealth of experience from her home country of Bulgaria to the South Bay. She currently ranks in the top five in the country and has been the No. 1 ranked player in her age group for the last 10 years. She has won the Bulgarian National Championship in singles for the under 12, 14, 16 and 18 age groups while also competing in all European Cups and singles championships for the same age divisions.
"Both Lara and Rozalina will be impact players as true freshmen and will help us compete for the Mountain West title," Skorupka said. "Additionally, they are great people on and off the tennis court."
