Tempe, Ariz.------- The streak of academic excellence continues for the San Jose State University women's tennis program.
For the eighth consecutive year, which includes every season as a Mountain West member, the Spartans concluded their year with an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) team academic award. A team earns the national recognition for a cumulative team grade-point average of above 3.20 on a 4.00 scale.
"I'm very proud of our team for receiving this national academic award this season. It's amazing that our team has done it now for eight years in a row. It really shows the commitment this team has in the classroom," said San Jose State University women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka.
"This award also shows the hard work our academic support staff does for this team. A big 'thank you' to Julie Stansberry and Eileen Daley."
The ITA also announced its individual scholar-athlete award winners. Sophomore Savannah Sendar from The Netherlands and freshman Alba Pedrero Galindo from Spain met the criteria for being in the team's regular lineup, possessing a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher and being enrolled at a four-year college or university for at least two semesters.
The award for Sendar is her second ITA scholar-athlete award.
"Our women's tennis program consistently is one of our top academically-performing teams in our department. Coach Skorupka is successful in identifying student-athletes who can be successful academically and in competition. Congratulations to Coach Skorupka, the team, and Alba and Savannah who received these national academic honors. I'm very proud of this team," said Marie Tuite, San Jose State University's director of athletics.
In the last six years, the Spartans received 29 ITA Scholar-Athlete individual awards.
