Norman, OKLA.----- On a San Jose State University men's team that received a 2019 Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) academic award, senior Ben Campbell added to the list of Spartan accomplishments for the season as a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar.
The lefty from Edenhope, Australia was one of 290 NCAA Division I men's golfers to earn the national academic award. To qualify, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior academically, maintain a 3.20 or higher cumulative grade-point average, participate in at least 50 percent of the team's competitive rounds during the season, and have a stroke average of 76.0 or lower.
"Ben earned it the old-fashioned way – hard work," said San Jose State University men's golf coach John Kennaday. "I'm extremely proud of him and the example he set for those who follow a great Spartan."
Campbell averaged 73.54 strokes per round last season, better than a 1.00 stroke improvement from his junior season. His steady play was vital to the Spartan team that qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time since the 2012 season.
Besides earning the 2019 GCAA All-America Scholar honor, Campbell, a community college transfer from College of the Canyons received Academic All-Mountain West honors for the second time.
"Congratulations to Ben for being named an All-America Scholar. This award is a fitting tribute to conclude his college career as a valuable member of our men's golf team," said San Jose State University Athletics Director Marie Tuite. "We wish him the very best in his future endeavors. There is no doubt he will be successful no matter what professional path he chooses."
