Men’s Soccer Releases Schedule For 2019 Season

San José, Calif. -- The San José State men's soccer team is slated to open its regular season campaign at the Spartan Soccer Complex against Sacramento State on August 30, kicking off a loaded schedule for the 2019 season.

The Spartans will play a total of five teams who made the 2018 NCAA Tournament, welcoming two of those sides to the Spartan Soccer Complex.

"For the past two years we have been ranked in the top-30 nationally for strength of schedule and 2019 will be no different," said head coach Simon Tobin after announcing the schedule. "Pacific, Saint Mary's, Stanford, Grand Canyon and Air Force were all NCAA Tournament teams last year and we get to play key games against Saint Mary's and Air Force at home."

Tobin's team will kickoff its Western Athletic Conference schedule at home against CSU Bakersfield (Sept. 29), opening up a three-game homestand that will continue against Kansas City (Oct. 4) and Houston Baptist (Oct. 6).

San José State will round out its home conference slate against Utah Valley (Oct. 25) and defending WAC regular-season champion Air Force on Senior Day (Oct. 27). The Falcons finished the 2018 season with a record of 17-5 (8-2 WAC) and advanced all the way to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Spartans' first road trip of conference play will begin against defending WAC Tournament champion Grand Canyon (Oct. 11). The program is undefeated all-time against the Lopes in Phoenix.

It will also play its final three matches of the regular season on the road, making its Texas swing against UTRGV (Nov. 1) and Incarnate Word (Nov. 3) before heading to Seattle University (Nov. 9). The long road trip leads into the WAC Championships (Nov. 13-17 in Colorado Springs, Colo.), where the program will look to build on its back-to-back appearances in the WAC title match.

The conference schedule consists of a 11-match single round-robin format for all 12 WAC teams. A points system will be used to determine conference standings, where each team will receive three points for a win and one point for a tie. The top seven teams at the culmination of the regular season will then advance to the WAC tournament.

"Our non-conference schedule always serves us well for the demands of the WAC," Tobin said. "Without a doubt, our overall aim is to win the conference title after being the runner-up for the last two years."

Three of those non-conference opponents are coming off NCAA Tournament trips a year ago as SJSU will travel to Pacific (Sept. 2) and Stanford (Sept. 24). Paying a visit to Spartan Soccer Complex will be Saint Mary's (Sept. 9), a team fresh off an undefeated 2018 campaign.

In all, San José State will play in 18 regular season matches with eight contests at home and 10 on the road.
