San José, Calif. – San José State University women's basketball head coach Jamie Craighead has announced her team's 2019-20 schedule, highlighted by 14 home games and four contests against 2019 NCAA Tournament teams.
The Spartans will get the regular season tipped off at UC Irvine (Nov. 5) before returning to San José for their home opener against Eastern Washington (Nov. 8) at the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
"I am just looking forward to the season and focusing on each game as it comes," says Craighead. "Each game matters and each opponent will get our very best. I'm ready to welcome the team back to campus and to get back on the court preparing for our opponents ahead."
SJSU will leave the state just once in non-conference play, heading to Hawaii for the two-game Maui Jim Maui Classic (Dec. 18-19). They will face BYU to tip-off the tournament prior to playing Northern Arizona in the Maui finale. The Cougars are coming off a 26-7 season a year ago, earning a No. 7 seed into the NCAA Tournament where they would take down Auburn in the first round.
In addition to the home opener against the Eagles, Craighead's team will welcome Sacramento State (Nov. 17), Buffalo (Nov. 21), San Diego (Nov. 23) and La Verne (Dec. 14) to the Provident Credit Union Event Center for non-conference home games. The Bulls headline the slate, posting a 24-10 mark last season en route to an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The remainder of the road portion of the non-conference slate features consecutive road games against cross-town rival Santa Clara (Nov. 12) and UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 15) and the team's final tuneup before Mountain West play begins against CSU Bakersfield (Nov. 29).
Five days after the trip to Bakersfield, San José State will tip-off conference play at Utah State (Dec. 4) for the program's earliest start to league play since joining the Mountain West. Its conference home opener will come later that week against San Diego State (Dec. 7), the first of nine league games to be played in San José.
Rival Fresno State (Jan. 4) will pay a visit to the Provident Credit Union Event Center for the team's first home game in January, with the Spartans making the return trip to Fresno one month later (Feb. 12).
Defending Mountain West champion Boise State (Jan. 29) will pay a visit to San José to round out the month of January. The Broncos are coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance in a season that featured 28 victories.
In the Mountain West's unbalanced schedule, the Spartans will face San Diego State (Dec. 7 at home) and Wyoming (Feb. 1 in Laramie) once and all other member institutions twice.
Senior Night will feature a visit from Utah State (Feb. 24) with the regular season finale coming in Las Vegas against UNLV (Feb. 27).
The 2019 Mountain West Women's Basketball Championship will be held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas and is scheduled for March 1-4.
