This Week in Spartan Athletics (Aug. 20-25)

Welcome back to school this week all Spartan students who start class on Wednesday! We are excited to have you back on campus!

This Week in San José State Athletics returns this week to catch you up on last week's action and see what's ahead for the Spartans!

Free Admission to Gilroy Residents
As part of a campus-wide effort in response to the tragic shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, the San José State University athletics department is teaming up to support the city of Gilroy, 16 miles south of San José and at the southern end of Santa Clara County.

SJSU Athletics is offering up to four free tickets to all Gilroy residents for any Spartan athletics event in the month of August, including the following games:
August 22 - Women's Soccer vs. Cal Poly, 7 p.m.
August 27 - Men's Soccer vs. Holy Cross, 7 p.m
August 29 - Football vs. Northern Colorado, 7 p.m.
August 30 - Men's Soccer vs. Sacramento State, 7 p.m.

In addition, all proceeds from Spartans Eats concession sales of garlic fries at the football team's season opener against Northern Colorado will be donated to the Gilroy relief efforts.

Women's Soccer (0-0)
This Week: The Spartans open the 2019 season this Thursday evening with a home match against Cal Poly beginning at 7 p.m. The team then travels to UC Santa Barbara for a Sunday afternoon match.

Spartan Fact: The Spartans were picked to finish second in the Mountain West for  the fourth consecutive season. Last season, they fought their way through the conference slate to earn a No. 4 seed in the Mountain West Tournament where they defended their home turf at the Spartan Soccer Complex to win the title.

Volleyball (0-0)
This Week: The Spartans host the annual Blue & Gold scrimmage this Saturday, August 24, inside Spartan Gym. Fans can come check out the 2019 Spartans before the regular season begins on Friday, August 30 at the Aggie Invitational hosted by UC Davis.

Spartan Fact: San José State was picked fifth in the 2019 MW Preseason Coaches poll. The Spartans finished 2018 with a 16-11 overall record and 11-7 MW record, good for fourth in the standings.

August 24 - Blue & Gold Scrimmage, Spartan Gym, 2 p.m.

Men's Soccer (0-0)
This Week: The Spartans are currently training for the 2019 season. The team will play an exhibition match this Saturday at California beginning at noon.  SJSU begins regular season play on Friday, August 30 against Sacramento State at the Spartan Soccer Complex. 

Spartan Facts: San José State returns 16 letterwinners from the 2018 team that made it to the championship match of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

This Week: The Spartans are getting ready to start classes and putting in the work for the 2019 home opener next week against Northern Colorado.
