LOS ANGELES, Calif. – For the third time in three tries, San Jose State women's soccer shutout out their opponent, this time coming on the road against Loyola Marymount as the Spartans picked up their first win of the season in a 1-0 decision on Thursday evening. Spartans' head coach Lauren Hanson picked up her 50th win of her coaching career with the victory.
"This was a great, gritty first win on the road for us," Hanson said. "We battled all game long and although it wasn't our prettiest soccer, our team showed great leadership, depth and character. Our back line and goalkeeping was on point tonight and I'm proud of them for their performance."
Deadlocked at no score in the 69th minute of play, freshman Alexis Brewah took a pass from Karlee Pottorff and buried a shot into the back of the net for her first-career goal and the Spartans' first goal of the season. Brewah played 30 minutes from off the bench.
"Our bench came in and made a huge difference for us to keep the ball," Hanson said. "Alexis Brewah made a huge impact and came up big for us with a beautiful goal!"
The Spartans put up just five shots for the game, but the one from Brewah was all that was needed as the shot proved to be the game-winner after the SJSU Defense locked down LMU to pick up their third-consecutive shutout to open the season. Goalkeeper Ariana Romero, making her third-straight start, was outstanding in the net once again making four saves, with three coming in the second half.
With the win, Hanson not only picked up her 50th career win, she also became the third-fastest among active Mountain West women's soccer coaches to achieve the feat and is just the second Spartan women's soccer coach to tally 50 wins.
Also with the win, SJSU improves to 1-0-2 on the season heading into Sunday's showdown at No. 3 Stanford. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. PT and fans can watch live on the Pac-12 Network.
