Spartan Baseball Adds Ross Gusky As Assistant Coach

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose State baseball has hired Ross Gusky as an assistant coach. Gusky joins the Spartans after three seasons on the coaching staff at Saint Mary's. SJSU head coach Brad Sanfilippo made the announcement on Friday.

Gusky will serve as the Spartans' new pitching coach.

"The Spartan baseball program is making a great addition in Ross Gusky as our pitching coach," Sanfilippo said. "Coach Gusky brings a wealth of experience as a coach and a player at all levels of collegiate baseball. Ross has been a part of one of the best pitching programs statistically in the nation at St. Mary's and has helped develop a number of SMC arms into draft picks. He worked hard in hand with one of the best pitching coaches in (Long Beach State head coach) Eric Valenzuela in building a dominant pitching staff at SMC."

Gusky worked as an assistant coach at Saint Mary's from 2016-19. He primarily served as the team's catching coach, hitting instructor, base running instructor and handled multiple pitching coach duties. In 2018, he was promoted to assistant coach after serving as a volunteer assistant in his first season.

Gusky developed multiple Major League Baseball draft picks from 2017-18 including 2017 fourth round selection Drew Strotman.

"Our players will benefit from his knowledge, attention to detail and his ability to communicate," Sanfilippo said. "We are excited about our future on the mound with Coach Gusky."

Prior to Saint Mary's, Gusky was an assistant coach for the Waynesboro Generals in Virginia in 2015-16, part of Valley League Baseball. The summer league program peaked at a No. 6 national ranking under his helm. Gusky also spent time on the coaching staff at Valdosta State in Valdosta, Georgia, as a pitching and hitting volunteer/graduate assistant coach. Four Valdosta State pitchers were drafted into the MLB during his tenure. He also coached three All-Gulf South Conference pitchers as well as an all-region and All-American selection

Gusky, a 2015 graduate, stared on the diamond from 2013-15 for Valdosta State. A two-time Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week honoree, he was a two-time NJCAA Academic All-Conference selection and led the team to the 2010 GSC Championship.

Gusky also played professionally for the Washington Wild Things and Vienna Metro Stars.
