Spartans Drop Heartbreaker In Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. –San Jose State women's soccer dropped a heartbreaker to Sacramento State as the Hornets scored in the 88th minute to win 2-1.

After a scoreless first half, Sacramento State jumped out to a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the half as Kylee Kim-Bustillos scored from inside the box to give the Hornets the lead. Just five minutes later, however, the Spartans countered thanks to a yellow card.

After Sacramento State's Erika Munoz was carded just outside the box, Sabrina Weinman took the free kick and put a perfect curl on the ball to bury it into the left-hand corner of the net past the diving Hornets' keeper. The goal was Weinman's first of her young career.

Following the goal, the Spartan offense had several great chances and finished with a total of 10 shots, five on goal. Kristen Amarikwa got the first great look in the 59th minute as she nearly scored from just a few feet out, but Sacramento State Keeper Aaliyah Fesili, who finished with four saves, was able to corral the ball.

In the 78th minute, it was Jamilecxth Becerra that nearly put the Spartans on top as she played a corner perfectly, however her shot was also saved by Fesili.

The match seemed as if it was destined for overtime when Sacramento State made their final push in the 88th minute. Ariana Nino scored the game-winner with just 87:56 left on the clock.

With the loss, SJSU drops to 2-2-2 while Sacramento State improves to 4-1-2. The Spartans return to the pitch on Sunday as the host Pac-12 opponent Arizona at the Spartan Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. PT.
