Spartans Play #3-UCLA Tough In 15-10 Non-Conference Loss

Stanford, Calif.—Marc Weber scored three of San Jose State University's 10 goals in a 15-10 non-conference loss to #3 UCLA in the Stanford Invite.

Adam Bado and Niels Hofmeijer, with two each, and Emerson Trout, Brad Dennis and Giaccomo Lovatelli, with one, also scored goals for the Spartans (0-3).

UCLA (5-0) led the first quarter of the match, 2-1, but Trout tied the score at 5-5 with a goal at the end of the first half. Bado's first goal tied the score again at 6-6 early in the third quarter before the Bruins took the lead for good at 5:54 on Feliz Bronzyna-VIlim's first of two goals in the second half.

Bado's second goal with 5:25 to go in the fourth quarter closed San Jose State's deficit to 11-9, the closest the Spartans would get the rest of the way.

"They (UCLA) are a very good team and being tied with them in the third quarter will help our confidence," said San Jose State head coach Bruce Watson, whose team has played the #2, #3 and #5-ranked teams in the country in the first two weeks of the season . "It (the match) also exposed our inexperience and what we need to work on."

Spartan goalkeeper Yahav Fire was credited with two saves.

San Jose State finished up its action in the Stanford Invite losing an exhibition match to a San Francisco Olympic Club team, 22-11. Hofmeijer was the Spartans' leading scorer with three goals. Finn Pardon and Neil Arnett each had a pair. Nick Marchione, Bado, Ary Kamen, and Gage Pranajaya each scored once.

The Spartans will return to action September 21 and 22 for the Aggie Invite in Davis, Calif., against California Baptist University and California on Saturday and Pacific, Whittier College and Ottawa on Sunday.
