Spartans Start 2019-20 Season at Golfweek Conference Challenge

Cedar Rapids, Iowa—The San José State men's golf team made 15 birdies during the first round of the 2019-20 season as the Spartans are tied for 11th at the Golfweek Conference Challenge played at the Cedar Rapids Country Club.
 
The Spartans shot a six-over 294 and are tied for 11th with Furman. Ball State leads the tournament at nine-under 279, followed by Iowa at five-under 283.
 
Bryce Wortman shot the Spartans' best round of the day with a two-under 70 and is tied for 11th. He was three under through the first nine holes with birdies on #5, #6 and #9. He maintained his score with five consecutive pars and then a birdie on #15 found Wortman at four-under. Unfortunately, bogeys on two of his final three holes finished his round at two-under par. He is one of 18 players who finished the round under par.

Caleb Shetler was one of 13 players to shoot an even-par 72 on the day to tie for 19th place. He was even par through nine holes, making a birdie on #6, bogey on #2 and seven pars. After bogeys on #10 and #13 found him at +2, Shetler then responded with birdies on #15 and #16 to finish the day at even par.
 
Sean Yu and Parker Sisk each shot a four-over 76 and are tied for 69th, while Nate Jetter shot a 77 and is tied for 77th.  Yu and Sisk each made two birdies during their rounds while Jetter had four birdies.
 
Playing as an individual, Carl Corpus shot a one-over 73 and is tied for 32nd, while R.J. Cesario shot a seven-over 79 and is tied for 86th. Corpus, who started his round on #10, was one-under par after nine holes after making a birdie on his first and ninth holes of the day. He added a birdie on #1 to go to two-under par through 10 holes maintained that score until his final four holes where he made three bogeys and a par. Cesario made one birdie on #6 and 10 pars during his round.
 
The Spartans begin the second round on Monday at 9:25 a.m. CT/7:25 a.m. PT, off of hole 10 with Drexel and Furman.
