Cedar Rapids, Iowa----- With one of four under-par team scores of the second round, the San Jose State University men's golf team moved into a fifth-place tie heading into the final 18 holes of the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
The Spartans posted a two-under par 286 on the par 72, 7,086-yard Cedar Rapids Country Club course for a 36-hole total of 580 in the 16-team field. Furman, like San Jose State, also turned in a 286-team score and is one of four teams tied with the Spartans.
Tournament leader Ball State again had the best team round of the day at seven-under par 281. The Cardinals at 560 have an 11-stroke lead over second place Arkansas State, which was five-under for the round and five-under for the tournament at 571. Campbell is third at 574 and Iowa is fourth at 578. The Spartans are one of five teams at 580.
Every San Jose State player had a better second-round score than in the first round.
Freshman Caleb Shetler with a two-under par 70 and junior Bryce Wortman with a 71 led the way for San Jose State. Shetler had three birdies and only one bogey in his second round as a college golfer. Parker Sisk signed for an even par 72 and Nate Jetter turned in a 73 for the team's 286 total.
The low San Jose State score of the day was the 69 by freshman Carl Corpus playing as an individual entry. The freshman from the Philippines reached three under in his round with four birdies in an eight-hole span. Only six players in the 86-player field posted a sub-70 score in the second round.
In the race for medalist honors, David Perkins of Illinois State is the tournament leader at nine-under par 135. He has a two-shot lead over Zan Luka Stirn of Arkansas State, who has a 137. Ball State teammates Keegan Bronnenberg and Joey Ranieri are tied for third at 139.
Wortman is the top San Jose State player with his 141 total. He is tied for sixth. Corpus and Shetler are two of five golfers tied for 10th at 142.
The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes on September 17.
