STANFORD, Calif. – It took 323 minutes and having to face one of the best teams in the nation, but San Jose State women's soccer finally conceded their first goal of the season in the 13th minute against No. 3 Stanford Sunday evening at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal went on to strike for six more goals in a 7-0 victory.
With the loss, the Spartans drop to 1-1-2 on the year while No. 3 Stanford improves to 4-0-0 and extended their home winning streak to 31-straight contests.
"Obviously Stanford is one of the best teams in the nation and they played like it tonight," head coach Lauren Hanson said. "I liked that we played with a lot of effort and never quit. Kristen Amarikwa and Ariana Romero, I thought, were both fantastic tonight."
Despite conceding the seven goals, Romero came away with a season-best seven saves in 30 shots faced. The sophomore transfer from Seattle University now has 18 saves on the season in four starts.
The Cardinal jumped out early in the 12th on reigning Mac Hermann Trophy Winner Catarina Macario's strike to the upper-left corner. The junior finished the evening two goals and two assists in 47 minutes. Goals at 31' and 40' minute mark gave Stanford a 3-0 lead heading into the half.
In the second half, Stanford struck for two quick goals in a three-minute span before Macario doubled up in the 61st minute. The Cardinal put one more in the net in the 86th minute to cap the evening.
The Spartans return to their home field on September 6, against Utah Valley for their first match at the Spartan Soccer Complex since the season opener.
